What’s the Difference Between the Abortion Pill and Plan B?

Do you find yourself wondering the difference between Plan B and the abortion pill? You’re not alone! We get this question frequently, and we are here to bring some clarity!

In addition to finding clarity, if you’re wondering about the difference because you’re experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and wondering what to do, you’ve come to the right place!

How is the abortion pill different from Plan B?

The abortion pill, also known as RU 486, is a medical abortion method consisting of two different drugs that you take after confirming your pregnancy.

The Morning-After Pill or Plan B is not an abortion method but a contraceptive that lowers, but not 100% eliminates, the risk of becoming pregnant.

How and where do you get the abortion pill?

A licensed doctor is the only one who can provide the abortion pill. Although the abortion pill is now permitted to be mailed after a TelaMed appointment, we strongly encourage a follow-up, in-person appointment with the medical professional who made the prescription to ensure successful termination.

How does the abortion pill work?

The abortion pill is made up of two medicines. The first drug is mifepristone and the second drug is misoprostol. The mifepristone causes the fetus to stop growing, and the misoprostol causes the uterus to discharge the fetus.

How does Plan B work?

Like birth control pills, Plan B works by temporarily delaying the release of an egg from the ovary. That way, there is no egg to meet the sperm. Without an egg to fertilize, you can’t get pregnant.

When can you take the abortion pill?

The abortion pill is only effective when taken by the tenth week of pregnancy. The earlier it is taken, the more effective it will be.

When can you take Plan B?

You can take Plan B after three instances:

  • You’ve had unprotected sex without any use of birth control.
  • You can take Plan B if you had an issue with your regular birth control method (e.g., the condom broke or slipped).
  • You can take Plan B if you missed a dose (or more) of your regular birth control pill.

How effective is the abortion pill?

For those who eight weeks pregnant or less, the abortion pill is up to 98% effective. Women 8-9 weeks pregnant report it is effective 96% of the time and 93% for those 9-10 weeks pregnant.

How effective is Plan B?

7 out of every 8 women who used Plan B as directed and could have gotten pregnant did not become pregnant.
