The abortion pill, also known as medication abortion, has become a popular choice for many women seeking to end an early pregnancy. It’s often marketed as a safe, private, and convenient option for terminating a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks. However, as with any medical procedure, understanding the effectiveness of the abortion pill is crucial to making an informed decision.
If you’re considering the abortion pill, or simply curious about how well it works, it’s important to have accurate information. In this article, we’ll break down how the abortion pill works, its effectiveness, and what to do if it doesn’t work as expected.
How the Abortion Pill Works
The abortion pill works through a two-step process:
- Step 1: Taking Mifepristone – The first medication, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone that supports pregnancy. This is what causes the pregnancy to stop progressing.
- Step 2: Taking Misoprostol – 24 to 48 hours later, you take misoprostol. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. This is the part of the process that leads to cramping, bleeding, and the expulsion of pregnancy tissue.
The combination of these two medications is generally effective, but it’s important to note that you will experience bleeding and cramping as the body expels the contents of the uterus. If you experience any signs that the pill didn’t work, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
How Effective is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill can be effective when used correctly. The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is approximately 95-98% effective in terminating a pregnancy when used within the first 10 weeks.[1]
This means that most women who follow the instructions and are within the recommended timeframe will have a successful medical abortion.
However, effectiveness can vary based on several factors, including how far along the pregnancy is, how well the medication is taken, and certain health conditions.
How Effective is the Abortion Pill at Different Stages of Pregnancy?
While the abortion pill is highly effective in early pregnancy, timing is a crucial factor. Here’s a breakdown of the effectiveness of the abortion pill at different stages:
- First 5 Weeks: The abortion pill is most effective during the first 5 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the success rate is close to 98-99%.[1]
- 6-8 Weeks: From 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy, effectiveness decreases to 98%-95%.[1]
- 9-10 Weeks: The abortion pill remains effective up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, but the success rate may slightly decrease as you approach the 10-week mark. The success rate between 9 to 10 weeks is still around 91-93%[2], but you may be at a higher risk of needing additional medical intervention if the abortion is incomplete.
Beyond 10 weeks, the abortion pill is generally not recommended. The further along you are in your pregnancy, the less effective the abortion pill becomes.
If the abortion pill fails or doesn’t work as expected, you may need additional medical intervention, such as a surgical abortion. It’s crucial to have follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to ensure that the abortion is complete and that no further intervention is needed.
Signs the Abortion Pill Didn’t Work
It’s essential to know the signs that the abortion pill didn’t work. Some of the symptoms that could indicate an incomplete abortion include[2]:
- Prolonged, heavy bleeding (more than a regular period)
- Continued bleeding after three weeks
- Abdominal pain that does not go away after a few days of taking Misoprostol
- Fever
If you experience any of these symptoms or have concerns that the abortion pill hasn’t worked, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. A follow-up appointment, ultrasound, or surgical treatment may be required.
